Indexing API vs Sitemap: When to Use Which

Getting new or updated pages into Google's index relies on two main mechanisms: sitemaps and the Indexing API. Both are official Google methods. Here’s how they differ and when to use each.

Sitemaps

An XML sitemap lists URLs you want Google to know about. You submit the sitemap in Google Search Console. Google crawls the sitemap periodically and discovers new or changed URLs from the list. There is no guarantee of when Google will visit a given URL; it depends on crawl budget, site authority, and how often the sitemap is recrawled. For many sites, new pages are crawled within days to two weeks.

Indexing API

The Indexing API lets you notify Google that a specific URL has been added or updated. You send a request per URL. Google treats these as high-priority crawl hints. In practice, URLs submitted via the API are often crawled within hours or a couple of days, which is usually faster than waiting for sitemap-based discovery alone.

When to use which

  • Use a sitemap: You should always have a sitemap and submit it in Search Console. It’s the baseline way to tell Google what URLs exist and how they change.
  • Add the Indexing API (or a service like GoogleIndexing.com): When you have important new or updated pages (e.g. product pages, key articles, job postings) and you want them crawled sooner than sitemap discovery typically allows.

They work together: the sitemap gives Google the full picture of your site; the Indexing API highlights specific URLs for faster attention.
